Dog Sledding in Kvikkjokk - Wolverine Territory

Available dates: 20th January to 20th of April.
Our dog sledding adventure is based in the real Lapland, in the north of Sweden and offers a true taste of the wilderness and excitement of an extended dog sledding tour - with the added bonus of a good chance to see the spectacular Northern Lights during the tour.
Day 1 Arrival in Jokkmokk. We meet you at 18:00 and provide you with information on the program for the following seven days. We have a evening meal together and then check out the equipment.
Day 2 Kvikkjokk and Njunjes. The start of our wilderness adventure. After breakfast we go to the kennels in Jokkmokk and load the dogs. Then we drive to Kvikkjokk where we give you instructions on how to handle and drive a dog team. You will get three to four dogs each that you will harness yourself with the help of the guides. We load our sleds and get ready for departure. We stop for lunch on a mountain after finding a suitable spot. Hot drinks and sandwiches follow. After lunch we head for the Njunjes cabin. After settling the dogs in for the night, we cook a nice evening meal. Nature - the journey begins along the sprawling frozen delta of the Tarra river and continues up through the spruce covered mountain valley. Near to the Njunjes cabin, the forests are full of mountain birches as the pine trees cannot survive here.
Day 3 Såmmarlappa. The home of the lynx. We prepare breakfast together and feed the dogs and then we clean the cabin and chop wood for the next visitors. Our destination for today is the Såmmarlappa cabin which we reach travelling through lynx territory. Steep mountain slopes, ravines, birch forests and wild terrain with huge boulders. This is the lynx’s enviroment. If we are lucky, we will see some tracks from this large graceful cat. Nature - narrow mountain glens with short mountain birch forests. We follow the frozen river and cross the Tarrariver ice region.
Day 4 Tuottar. ‘Where the wind blows wild’. We follow the same morning procedure as the day before. and then we leave the birch forests behind us and travel up to the bare mountain top. No forest for protection here, but we do get a great view! If we are lucky, we might see a majestic elk (moose) in the distance. The final destination of the day is our cabin in Touttar.
Day 5 Padjelanta. A daytrip on the tundra. If the weather allows, we will go on a daytrip from the cabin toward Saloloukta. We will plan the day according to the weather and snow conditions. Nature - the Touttar cabin is very isolated, located in the middle of the endless tundra. The days travelling distance and ascension depends on where we choose to go and on the weather conditions.
Day 6 Tarrakaise. The ‘quiet place at the foot of the mountain’. We turn the sleds around and return downhill along the Tarra valley. Today is mostly downhill. We begin by travel over the open tundra before we direct our dog teams down the Tarra rivers uppermost glen.
Day 7 Kvikkjokk. Back to civilisation. We travel along the Tarra valley and back through the forest with the mountains surrounding us. After several days in the white and grey landscape, the green forest is a welcoming sight. When we arrive in Kvikkjokk, we load everything in the minibus and drive to Jokkmokk. When we arrive in Jokkmokk we can enjoy a welcome hot shower and a sauna before a final dinner together.
Day 8 Departure day. Breakfast and then departure.
